What’s to Love About Elizabeth City? Everything!

Valentine’s Day is coming up, and when people ask me how Elizabeth City celebrates this special sweetheart’s day, I tell them, “Let me count the ways!” For starters, the date falls on a Saturday this year—the perfect excuse for couples to plan a romantic overnight getaway. Elizabeth City features a number of cozy B&Bs and small inns, in addition to brand-name accommodations located throughout the city. Some are offering special rates, including the Hampton Inn. Your best bet is to check our lodging guide to see which place interests you and plan accordingly. If you arrive early in the day, be sure to visit the Museum of the Albemarle for a stroll through more than 400 years of Albemarle history, and stop by Arts of the Albemarle for a peek in its visual arts gallery, featuring original work from North Carolina artists. If you’re traveling with kids, you’ll want to visit Page After Page, an independent bookseller along the downtown waterfront. The owner is hosting a children’s Valentine’s party featuring games, stories, Valentine’s crafts and a snack. The cost is $5 and the fun is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. What’s more romantic than a night under the stars with your loved one? The Khan Planetarium at Elizabeth City State University will have special Valentine’s Day programming on Feb. 14 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The staff has planned laser light shows about love songs and Legends of the Night Sky: Perseus and Andromeda, a live Night Sky presentation and another light show, Legends of the Night Sky: Orion. All shows are free, but please reserve your space in advance by calling (252) 335-3759. For a romantic dinner, there’s nothing like a night on the town—and many Elizabeth City restaurants are planning special menus. At press time this list included Montero’s, Sidney’s Café and Bistro, Groupers, The Pines and an elegant five-course Valentine’s Day dinner at the Culpepper Inn.
