This week, the “Harbor of Hospitality” is delighted to welcome visiting artists and arts enthusiasts to Splash! June 1-6, accomplished painters from the south and beyond are visiting our fair city doing what they do best: creating, collaborating and cultivating relationships among each other. “There is nothing else that compares to Splash,” said Katie Murray, executive director of Arts of the Albemarle (AoA), an event host. “Artists from far and wide come to our little town, are hosted in community member’s homes and spend a week in their happy place—painting, taking workshops and enjoying parties each night. It’s a magical, relaxing experience for the artists and an inspiring and exciting time for Elizabeth City as well.” What’s truly great about Splash is that it is open to artists of all levels as well as art lovers and creative folk of every type. For the artists, Splash will once again offer the Splash Open Studio in the former Super10 space on Main St. Claim your space for the week for $75 (AoA Members) or $100 (Non-members). AoA is offering eight workshops for all experience levels and mediums including: “Absolutely Abstract Painting” with Audrey Phillips, “Personal Expression in Watercolors” (SOLD OUT) with Peter Marsh, Studio Sessions with Chad Hughes, “Playing with Knives—Creating Small Acrylic Studies” with Karin Neuvirth, “Going with the Flow—Painting Set Free” with Chrystal Hardt, and Watercolor Batik with Ryan Fox. For the art lovers, all studios are open during the week for you to drop in a visit and even buy artwork. A Plein Air Paint-Out and Wet Paint Sale has just been added as well! In addition to offering a competitive setting for plein air painters to show their stuff, the end result is beautiful paintings of our local scenery. The paint-out ends on Friday, just in time for First Friday ArtWalk at 5:30. Their work will be on the walls of AoA and ready for sale! Additional events during the week include: • Community ArtTalk with Dr. Norman Goodwin, Thursday at 4:15 in the Maguire Theatre • Plein Air Wet Paint Sale, Friday during First Friday ArtWalk, AoA’s 516 Gallery • Additional “pop-up” studios featuring pottery, metals, stained glass & more! Social happenings sprinkle the Splash schedule too, including a“Low Country Boil”, June 3; Splash Piano Bar, June 4; Elizabeth City’s popular First Friday ArtWalk, June 5, and Taste of the Albemarle, featuring savory bites and drinks served by local chefs, June 6. Registration details and lodging info about special Splash rates are available at www.artsaoa.com and check the Splash Facebook page for updates all week. So come on! Join us. Summer’s come early and so have the artists. It’s time to dive in and get a little wet at Splash!
