Five minutes from downtown Elizabeth City, tucked behind a thicket of marsh grasses and shrubs of the Causeway is a hidden oasis: the beautiful George M. Wood Memorial Park. The park offers breathtaking views in every direction. With a rail-less wood plank boardwalk built directly over the Pasquotank River that connects to a pier with additional boardwalks to the right and to the left and gazebos at each end, you’ll feel as though you’re walking on water as you follow the length of the main boardwalk. While the park is a small sanctuary and was not designed to accommodate physical activities such as jogging or frisbee tossing, it is an idyllic, tranquil setting for relaxing and reading while enjoying the sunshine, the breeze and indigenous flora. The park’s picturesque qualities and waterfront backdrop make it the perfect place for family photos or even as a secluded spot for popping the big question. The Elizabeth City shoreline is beautifully silhouetted by gorgeous sunsets and George M. Wood Memorial Park provides one of the best spots in town to watch the sky change colors each day. Grab something to-go from one of the many downtown restaurants or pack a picnic basket! Dine on the pier or in one of the gazebos with the river flowing directly below for a romantic date night. The tide splashing against the trunks of the towering cypress trees is a melodious sound and you might even witness a fisherman or two reeling in perch, bass or catfish. If you can plan your visit around sunset, the fiery-hued sky over the river will not disappoint and provides a perfect ending to a day of fun in Elizabeth City.
